I love how potato in French is pomme de terre, which pretty much means “earth apple.”
like what stupid frenchman saw this:
and said “zis petite légume looks like a, how you say, APPLE! hmmm… but it grows in ze earth… HON HON HON!…
In dutch it’s the same thing: aardappel. I suspect it’s more to do with the flesh being crispy and starchy than anything else.
Also see:
pindakaas- peanut cheese (peanut butter, well we do have a spreadable cheese as well….)
handshoe- hand shoe (glove) but oven glove is ovenwant
And then again pineapple or piña… It looks like a pinecone! Anyway I like the original name and meaning “In the scientific binomial Ananas comosus, ananas, the original name of the fruit, comes from the Tupi word nanas, meaning “excellent fruit”.” (Wikipedia)
