Cards on table: current costume obsessions

I’ve been looking through my stash of fabrics with a calculating eye and have finally settled on a few absolutely desperate to make right now projects. Most of which use my stash in some way or another šŸ™‚ This is all locked in and I have plans for what occasion each will be for šŸ™‚

Freya from Hunstman: Winter’s WarĀ (robes and armour) & Norma Shearer from Upstage

The armour can be from my stash (so lucky!) so can Norma’s gown. It’s the robes that is currently making my brain itch because I need to calculate and create my patterns precisely.

But that slinky velvet. Obsessed. There is a preview that has survived and it’s at the NZ film archive! The skirt front of the gown isn’t so exciting but the rest is. And I have many options to adapt the front of the skirt. And a lot of research as slinky gowns abound in the 1920s.

An early mantua.Ā

These are illustrative only, I am trying to debate between my stash options of black ribbed silk or a shot pale blue polyester. 9m of each!

Sheer 1870s

I have about 12m of cotton net. Now that I have my fluffy Robe de Style in lace I can put it all towards a fashion style that has had a dedicated folder for over a decade!

These are “new” projects. I am still working on my wall of things but these are mostly stash busting so really just a shifting around in my workroom šŸ™‚

To finish:

Marie Antoinette: thought I’d forgeotten? AHAHAHAHAH! All my trims are here so time to start patterning and washing sizing out of trims šŸ™‚

Cleves red velvet: this is long term hand sewing. And fiddly. But everything is put aside.

Valois: the skirt needs hemming and I am worried I have been rushing the stitches. Also the silk is insanely difficult to work with. I have scrap silk that is less difficult to try!

Silver Spanish: it’s lining, so much lining. I also took out some extra weight from the skirt to make it wearable.

Princess de Cleves: You’d think a doublet would be easy. Nope. But I figure I can couch some braid over the existing braid for some extra texture!

Hannibal gown: reassembly!

Phantom wedding gown: in storage with the Hannibal gear, no rush, but it is silly to leave it this long!

Mina: I have toĀ make the lining absolutely perfect as the silk has zero stretch and all my bodices have had some stretch. I now have the same ripstop cotton as for the bustle so it will be done!!! For my birthday? Maybe…

Worth Sunburst:Ā on hold, I did just find my 9m length of pale aqua silk chiffon so I may wind up with my own interpretation of the gown seeing as there are two extant versions already.Ā Also I have glass pearls set aside and that is more of the Kyoto style than Met style šŸ™‚

Ahsoka: lost a bit of steam on this. Still want to finish her šŸ™‚

Mothma: my dress shrank :/ I’m thinking of passing on the fabric parts to just reset.

Darth Talon: New bikini is fantastic! ANd I do need new lekku. My 2nd set are just too heavy šŸ™‚

Ashara: potentially be remade into my own SWTOR jedi knight Neimhaille šŸ™‚

Nyreen: With Andromeda coming out and more female turians running around I dug out my robes for her that were about to be thrown out. So resizing them šŸ™‚

Leia: my senatorial robes have just gone into the wash, I got new photos for my tutorial, and finally found a pair of soles that work! SHe has no heel, her shoes are made with that really gummy rubber and there are so many cool seams in her boots anyway.

Draenei: slightly on the back burner again. I have a habit of wanting to figure out how then figuring it out andĀ then not really wanting to finish šŸ˜‰

So at the heart of it I love patterning, and figuring stuff out, not so much the final stages. Ah well šŸ˜‰

@masseffect Nyreen progress! Again sorry for bathroom photos but this is the best lit mirror in the house at this time of day and I do not fancy setting my tripod out and all the rigmarole it takes to get my camera to focus when taking self portraits (I need to have a stand in or the camera focuses on the backgroundā€¦. I usually use a Christmas tree stand, vacuum tube and wig head, it can be entertaining)

Anyway so this is the first successful cast! I will be using this but I want to make as many sets as I can before the mold loses too much definition. I love the texture I got on the skull but it will eventually go bye bye. The very last set will be a semi rigid urethane which I will also use to cast my Asari pieces from and any other plaster mold looking a bit dodgy.

Also, I will be using various means to hold pieces together. The pins forced curves not present and the underside of the upper lip sticks out but will be glued flat to the inside. I will be using a lot of velcro dots. They stick very well to latex indeed and will allow for fast removal in case of heatstroke. Cough, not that that happened at the Dragon*Con parade at allā€¦ cough. ehem.

I may go try and test the hood pattern. Itā€™s crazy with overlaps and stand up collar and all that jazz.

(ETA: I use @XYZ because I cross post to twitter on this account šŸ˜‰ )

Oh my Goddess that is a bitchinā€™ Nyreen mask! I love it!

Thank you XD Indeed it is a Nyreen mask (five parts) currently stalled due to health reasons but I do hope to be able to start cutting out the fabric for her tunic and hood asap.Ā

Aw, I hope whatever health reasons there are clear up soon and donā€™t reappear. I hope the rest the costume also goes smoothly.

Thank you šŸ™‚ There is a concerted effort to ensure this! Including me taking a break from a few things including costumes I want to do but really donā€™t need. Nyreen is not one of these! lol! I will though not go mental like I did with Liara and try to make every detail ā€œrealā€ (the silver on her jacket is all applied, the layers are all different and only tacked together where needed). As for the attempt at seaming Samara and Shae Vizlaā€¦. yeah not going to do that again šŸ˜‰ Samara was about 120 pieces not including the buckle strapping).

Still going to attempt airbrushing the design of muscles on the undersuit if I canā€¦Ā

Oh wow. Thatā€™s a lot of pieces! But you did a Liara cosplay and a Samara cosplay? I think you just became my cosplay hero!

lol! Thank you šŸ™‚ I am a Bioware fangirl, I was hunting for interesting sci-fi costumes years ago and stumbled across screen caps of the ME crew in the Phoenix armour and just got hooked! When the sneak peaks of Samara came out that was when I got seriously addicted and then finally the SWTOR cinematic with Shae Vizla (or then unknown female Bounty Hunter) I just kind of lost it šŸ˜‰ You should be able to search tags here to find them, if not I have some tagging to do!

This looks AMAZING!!! Canā€™t wait to see the finished cosplay! šŸ™‚

Thank you! Trust me neither can I šŸ˜‰ I would have got her finished by now had not my sinuses ganged up and decided any vertical positions was going to hurt šŸ˜‰ Luckily I *am* getting better and am almost at the point of cutting out the fabric and at least overlocking the edges šŸ™‚ I do need to dig out some fabric soon anyway so I am going to get the silver and start making binding tape. Meep.

ā€œDo you ever think that maybe thereā€™s something more out there?ā€

ā€œWhat do you mean, evolution?ā€

ā€œI donā€™t know, like, that thereā€™s some greater purpose for all these animals Iā€™m making, other than just eating and pooping and having little animals.ā€

ā€œI guess I hadnā€™t really thought about it.ā€Ā

ā€œI just wonder what the point is sometimes. Whatā€™s stopping me from going off the rails and making this sage grouse look completely absurd? Why donā€™t I just give it demon eyes and ridiculous inflatable chest balloons? Who cares? What difference does it make?ā€

ā€œAw, come on, donā€™t talk like that.ā€

ā€œWhy not? Seriously, Iā€™m going to do it. See if anyone stops me. Bet you they wonā€™t.ā€

OMG! See, female Turians can haz boobs!

I shall hide now. My own brain hurts and now i don’t know if I can finish Nyreen at all now…

@masseffect Nyreen tunic, in pink! Love it! If the fabric was more durable this would be turned into Nyreenā€™s jimjams complete with pom pom slippers. Also mirrored photo is mirrored šŸ˜‰

The pattern does not include a few things but this is a guide as the fabric I will be using is bulkier than the flannel and also more yielding than the interfacing. That hoodā€¦ oy! I havenā€™t got the piping detail on there yet, I wanted the shape first. The actual fabric will drape very nicely and Iā€™ve used it for my Shaak Ti robes and Tykhi skirt already šŸ™‚ It also flares really nicely when bound in the silver fabric I plan on trimming this with.

Next step is to debate getting fabric custom printed or not. I may be able to find some textured lycra anyway and overdye/airbrush some shading in to it.
